As head of Rogers Townsend & Thomas' Default Services Section, Sam concentrates his practice in bankruptcy, mortgage foreclosure, real estate (property), eviction, and Veterans law.

Sam is a member of the Richland County and American (Member, Law Practice Management) Bar Associations; South Carolina Bar (Member, Sections on: Real Estate; Military Law); Mortgage Bankers Association of America; Mortgage Bankers Association of the Carolinas (Member, Loan Administration Committee and Associate Board Member); American Legal & Financial Network (Charter Member and Director); South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association; and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Greater Columbia. He has also served as staff attorney in the Office of District Counsel for the United States Veterans Administration, S.C. While staff attorney, his responsibilities included regulatory law, loan guaranty, medical malpractice, personnel law, and collections of V.A. debts, Veterans Guardianship law, and Medical Care Recovery Act cases. In 1984, Sam entered private practice with an emphasis in real estate development law. In 1986, he added foreclosure and bankruptcy law, eventually devoting a majority of his time to default services matters. He served as Colonel in the United States Army Reserves retiring in 1996 after serving as commander of the 12th Legal Services Organization.

Sam is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars covering real estate mortgage foreclosures and related topics.
